Custom Sensor Solutions for Motorsport Applications
When standard products are not suitable, bf1systems can rapidly adapt existing designs to create application-specific sensor solutions. These projects demonstrate how close customer collaboration and in-house engineering expertise enable tailored measurement solutions to be delivered in weeks rather than months.

From start to finish, bf1systems designs and develops its sensor solutions in-house, and having everything completely under our control allows us to quickly develop custom solutions for customers, where an off the shelf part isn't suitable for a specific application. 

In this article we will explore two examples of where custom solutions were quickly provided to customers to meet specific requirements. 

The first example was for a WEC customer who was having difficulty understanding an intermittent behaviour within their cooling system. The customer was already running an ASHT combined pressure/temperature sensor from bf1systems, and whilst the specification was fine for race and test use, the bandwidth of the sensor did not allow for the intermittent behaviour to be understood in detail. The customer reached out to bf1 and requested a higher bandwidth part to run in a specific test. Once we had discussed the specific requirement, and what the customer was trying to measure, we were able to quickly modify the sensor design, and produce a batch of parts for the customer, which went straight into test and were able to help better understand which component in the cooling system was producing the intermittent behaviour, leading to this being fixed.  

The second example is an open wheel race team who approached bf1 looking for a sensor to measure the temperature inside their brake ducts. After analysing the sensors available in the market, they had chosen the NTC2F temperature sensor, more traditionally used for powertrain applications, but which they believed would provide the rapid response needed for monitoring temperatures in this application. The design of the sensor also meant that with its threaded body, it was easy to adapt the brake duct design to include a mounting boss for the sensor to thread into. The sensor did however require some customisation, extending the Peek tip to be longer than the standard part, to ensure the sensing element sat in the middle of the duct and further away from other heat sources which may have otherwise affected the measurement accuracy.  

The sensor design was modified and parts produced in less than 6 weeks, from start to finish.
